x = smaller
y = larger
y = 1 + 4x
x = y - 22
Rearranging the second equation,
y = x + 22
Setting the two equations equal to each other
x + 22 = 1 + 4x
Solving for x
x - x + 22 = 1 + 4x - x
22 = 1 + 3x
22 - 1 = 1 - 1 + 3x
21 = 3x
21/3 = 3x/3
7 = x
x = 7, so
y = 4(7) + 1 = 29
