Question 657394: Mrs.Suarez bought 3 pairs of jeans and 5 shirts for $441. If each pair of jeans cost as much as each shirt,
What was the price of each pair of jeans?
What was the price of each shirt?
I am not sure about the formula I've put together for this question;
%282%2F3%29%283x%29%2B5x=441
x=36.75
And I've gathered if that is the price of a shirt, then the price of a pair of jeans must be $24.50.
But when I plugged in those two values to the original equation, it didnt check out.
What am I doing wrong?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Mrs.Suarez bought 3 pairs of jeans (3x) and 5 shirts (5y for $441.
If each pair of jeans cost as 2%2F3 much as each shirt", then
%282%2F3%29y=x
so, y=%283%2F2%29x
then we have 3x%2B5%283%2F2%29x=441....solve for x
3x%2A2+%2B%2815%2F2%29x=441%2A2
6x%2B15x=882
21x=882
x=882%2F21
highlight%28x=42%29...........the price of each pair of jeans
3+pairs of jeans cost 3x=3%2A42=126
and
5 shirts (5y=5%283%2F2%2942=5%2A3%2A21=315

check the sum: 3x%2B5x=441
126%2B315=441
441=441
