You can put this solution on YOUR website! Two surveyors with two-way radios leave the same point at 9:00 A.M., one walking due south at 5 mi/hr and the other due west at 2 mi/hr . How long can they communicate with one another if each radio has a maximum range of 6 miles? (Round to the nearest minute.)
-----
Draw the picture.
South-bound distance 5x miles, where x is amount of time.
-----
West-bound distance 2x miles, where x is the amount of time.
---------------------
You want the hypotenuse to be 6 miles.
-------------------------------------------
Use Pythagoras to get the hypotenuse.
(5x)^2 + (2x)^2 = 36
25x^2 + 4x^2 = 36
29x^2 = 36
x = 6/sqrt(29) = 1.114 hr = 1 hr 6 min 51 seconds
