You can put this solution on YOUR website! In a large herd of not hunted caribou, one-third of the adults are males. In a recent sampling of 1860 adult caribou from the herd, 21% of the males of the herd and 36% of the females from the herd were counted. How many adult caribou are in the herd?
----------
Let "x" be be the number of adult caribou in the herd.
(1/3)x is the number of adult males in the herd.
(2/3)x is the number of adult females in the herd.
EQUATION:
(0.21)(1/3)x + (0.36)(2/3)x=1860
0.07x+0.24x=1860
0.31x=1860
x=6000 (the number of adult caribou in the herd)
