given:

(2) +10d+%2B+25q+=+395+ ( in cents )

Multiply both sides of (1) by +10+
and subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +10d+%2B+25q+=+395+
(1) +-10d+-+10q+=+-260+
+15q+=+135+
+q+=+9+
and, since
(1) +d+%2B+9+=+26+
(1) +d+=+17+
Jose has 17 dimes and 9 quarters
