If you cut out squares 1 foot on a side from each of the corners, then the depth of the box will be 1 foot. In order for a 1 foot deep box to have a volume of 4 cubic feet, the area of the base must be 4 square feet. Since you started with a square piece of metal and the corner cutouts are symmetrical, the base of the box must be square. The side of a square with a 4 square foot area is 2 feet. 2 feet plus 1 foot on one side and 1 foot on the other side is 4 feet. The original piece of metal is 4 feet by 4 feet.
