Question 654021: About 14% of the population is math phobic. If two people are randomly selected what is the probability that both are math phobic? What is the probability that atleast one is math phobic?
Answers rounded to 4 decimal places. Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
Probability of Both: 0.14 times 0.14. Probability of At least one: 1 minus the probability of Neither. Probability of Neither: 0.86 times 0.86.
Rounding answers to 4 decimal places is totally inappropriate for the given data. The least precise given datum is to two decimal places, hence it is improper to state the answer to a precision greater than two places. Then again, not following instructions can be detrimental to your grade. You can however, demand that your teacher/instructor/professor provide you with the mathematical basis for requiring 4 decimal place accuracy for this problem. When s/he can't do it (and I guarantee s/he can't), ask why such inappropriate instructions were given. Note that 4 decimal place accuracy would have been not only appropriate but demanded had the problem been stated: "About 14.00% of the population is math phobic..."
