Log base b of X = y is the same as b^y = X.
In log3(1/243), the base (b) is 3. 1/243 is X. So you have:
3^y = 1/243
Taking the log of both sides, you get...
y log 3 = log 1/243
Dividing both sides by log 3 you get:
y = -5
So Log3(1/243) = -5
