Question 653086: A large drum filled with water is to be drained using a small opening at the top. one inch diameter hose or three 1/2 inch hoses can be used to siphon out the water. would it be faster to use, the one inch hose or the three 1/2 inch hoses? why?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The one inch hose has a cross-sectional area of Pi*r^2=Pi*(1/2)^2 =(1/4)Pi sq inches
The three 1/2 inch hoses together have a cross-sectional area of 3*Pi*(1/4)^2=3*Pi*(1/16)=(3/16)Pi sq inches.
Clearly, the 1 inch hose will siphon the water out faster because it is (1/16) inch larger than the (1/2) inch hoses and therefore allows more water to siphon through.

Hope this helps---ptaylor
