Let area of Gobi = G
Then area of Sahara = 7G
Sum of their areas = G + 7G, or 8G
Therefore, 8G = 4,000,000
G, or area of Gobi =  , or  sq miles
Area of Sahara = 4,000,000 - 500,000, or  sq miles
