Then original area = x^2
----
New Area = (x+3)^2 = x^2 + 6x+9
----
Equations:
New area - old area = 49 sq ft
x^2+6x+9 - x^2 = 49
6x+9 = 49
6x = 40
x = 20/3 ft
---
Original Area = x^2 = (20/3)^2 = 400/9 = 44.44 sq ft.
