Question 6511: Hello! I'm using my cousins e-mail address because I don't have one, but I heard from him that you help people if there struggling with there homework. I need Help. Please HELP ME UNDERSTAND STORY PROBLEMS. I am not good in math.
I'm not asking you to do my homework for me, I just need to know how to do them. I am e-mailing the hardest ones, because I tried to do them but my answers wwhere coming out wrong everytime.
1. A triangle has a perimeter of 75 meters. The length of the second side is 5 more than the first side. The length of the third side is double the second side less 20 meters. What is the length of each side.
2. The length of Betty's rectangular garden is 6 more than 2 times the width. If the perimeter is 84 feet, find the dimensions of her garden.
3. A piece of taffy 9 inches long was cut into 3 pieces. The longest piece is twice as long as the shortest piece. The medium piece is 1 inch more than the shortest piece. Find the length of the 3 pieces.
4. The perimeter of a picture fram is 50inches. The width is 3 less than the length. What is the size of the frame?
Please Please Help

You can put this solution on YOUR website! yes well i answered this question i think yesterday.see th enewly answered questions thingy to find teh answer .it is in 2 question.but what the heck i ll answer t any way. thankful.....
1. A triangle has a perimeter of 75 meters. The length of the second side is 5 more than the first side. The length of the third side is double the second side less 20 meters. What is the length of each side.
length of side 1=x
length of side 2=x+5
length of side 3=2(x+5)-20=2x+10-20=2x-10
75(perimeter)=x+x+5+2x-10
75=4x-5
75+5/4=x
80/x=4
x=2
2. The length of Betty's rectangular garden is 6 more than 2 times the width. If the perimeter is 84 feet, find the dimensions of her garden.
width=x
length=2x+6
84(perimeter)=2(2x+x+6)
84-12=6x
72/6=x
x=12
3. A piece of taffy 9 inches long was cut into 3 pieces. The longest piece is twice as long as the shortest piece. The medium piece is 1 inch more than the shortest piece. Find the length of the 3 pieces.
total length=9
shortest piece=x
medium =x+1
large=2x
9=x+x+1+2x
9-1=4x
8/4=x
x=2
4. The perimeter of a picture fram is 50inches. The width is 3 less than the length. What is the size of the frame?
length=x
width=x-3
50(perimeter)=2(x+x-3)
50=2(2x-3)
50+6=4x
56/4=x
x=14

You can put this solution on YOUR website! 1. Let side 1 = x, side 2 = x + 5, and side 3 = 2(x + 5) - 20.
All of the 3 sides added together have to equal 75. Therefore:
x + x + 5 + 2(x + 5) - 20 = 75
4x + 15 - 20 = 75
4x = 80
x = 20
Therefore, side 1 = 20 m, side 2 = 25 m, and side 3 = 2(20 + 5) - 20 = 30 m.
2. Let the width of the rectangle = w and the length of the rectangle = l.
Therefore, l = 2w + 6. A rectangle has two lengths and two widths. As such, the perimeter of a rectangle is 2l + 2w, which you are told in the question equals 84.
2l + 2w = 84
2(2w + 6) + 2w = 84
4w + 12 + 2w = 84
6w = 72
w = 12
l = 2(12) + 6 = 30
I'll let you work out the last two by yourself because these questions ALL work on the same principle.
Good luck and if you need any further help, just submit another question :).
Regards,
-Mike
