You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the difference of 2 numbers is 5. 5 times the lesser number is 9 greater than the greater number. what is the number?
-----------
x-y=9
That means the "x" is the larger number.
5y-9=x
---------------
Subtitute into the 1st equation to solve for "y" as follows:
(5y-9)-y=9
4y=18
y=9/2
Substitute into x=5y-9 to solve for "x":
x=5(9/2)-9
x=45/2-18/2
x=27/2
------------
Check:
x-y=9
27/2-9/2=9
18/2=9
9=9

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=greater number
And y=lesser number
The difference between the two numbers is 5 so we have our first equation:
(1) x-y=5
Five times the lesser number (5y) is 9 greater than the greater number (x+9) and we have our second equation:
(2) 5y=x+9
Add y to both sides of the equation in (1)and we get:
x=y+5 substitute this in (2) and we have:
5y=y+5+9 simplifying we have:
4y=14
y=3.5 the lesser number
substitute 3.5 for y in (1):
x-3.5=5
x=8.5 the greater number
CK
difference is 5
8.5-3.5=5
5=5
Five times the lesser number is 9 greater than the greater number
5(3.5)=8.5+9
17.5=17.5
