Question 649396: Riley, Benny, and Claudia share a bag of peas in the ratio 4:3:8. If claudia gives 1/4 of her share to Benny, Benny will have 14 more peas than Riley. How many peas are there altogether? Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Riley, Benny, and Claudia share a bag of peas in the ratio 4:3:8.
If Claudia gives 1/4 of her share to Benny, Benny will have 14 more peas than Riley.
How many peas are there altogether?
:
Let x = the multiplier
then
4x = R's peas
3x = B's peas
8x = C's peas
and
15x = total number of peas
:
"If claudia gives 1/4 of her share to Benny, Benny will have 14 more peas than Riley."
3x + *8x = 4x + 14
3x + 2x = 4x + 14
5x - 4x = 14
x = 14 is the multiplier
therefore
15(14) = 210 peas altogether

Check this, find how many each started out with, and find the total
R: 14(4) = 56 peas
B: 14(3) = 42 peas
C: 14(8) = 112 peas
--------------------
total peas: 210
