You can put this solution on YOUR website! In the morning, May drove to an appointment at 50 mph. Her average speed on the return trip on the afternoon was 40 mph. The return trip took 1/8 hour longer. How far did she travel to the appointment?
:
An easy way is to first find the time required at 50 mph
Let t = time at 50 mph
Then (t+(1/8)) = time at 40 mph
:
Write a distance equation: dist = speed * time:
Dist there = dist back
50t = 40(t+(1/8))
50t = 40t + 5
50t - 40t = 5
10t = 5
t = 5/10 = 1/2 hr at 50 mph
:
Dist = 50*(1/2) = 25 miles
:
Check using 40 mph:
40((1/2)+(1/8) =
40 * (5/8) = 25 mi back
