Question 648145: If a man makes $1,000.00 for 4 minutes and 48 seconds of work; how much will he make for 3 hours and 50 minutes?
I converted time to seconds and tried 1,000 over 28 equals x over 590 but that didn't work. Thank you for your help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Firstly, I have a question,"How do you convert 4min and 48sec to get 28sec? Or how do you get 3hr and 50min = 590sec?
Let's do it right.
There are 60sec/min, so
(1) 4 min = 4*60 sec or
(2) 4 min = 240 sec
Now add 48 sec and get
(3) time to earn $1000 is 288 seconds
This is an earning rate of
(4) pay rate = 1000/288 $/sec
This rate, by the way is $12,500/hr.
Now you want to find out how much is earn for 3hr and 50min. Let's convert this to seconds.
There are 60min/hr, so
(5) 3 hr = 3*60 min or
(6) 3 hr = 180 min
Now add 50 minutes and get
(7) The total time worked is 230 minutes. However our rate is $ per sec, so we must covert 230 minutes to seconds.
(8) Work time is 230min*60sec/min = 230*60 = 13,800 sec
Then the total earnings are
(9) Earnings = 1000/288*13800
(10) Earnings = $47,916.67
We could also find the earning for 3 and 5/6 of an hr using
(11) Earnings = 12,500*23/6 = $48,916.67
Question: Who dreamed up this rediculous problem?
