Question 647835: Shayna's school is selling tickets to a fall musical. On the first day of ticket sales the school sold 4 adult tickets and 8 child tickets for a total of $140. The school took in $80 on the second day by selling 4 adult tickets and 2 child tickets. What is the price each of one adult ticket and one child ticket?
I worked on this problem and got 4x + 8y = 140 and 4x + 2y = 80. I am stuck. I really could use some help on this one. Thank you so much.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Almost there
+x+ = price of adult tickets
+y+ = price of child tickets
(1) +4x+%2B+8y+=+140+
(2) +4x+%2B+2y+=+80+
----------------
Subtract (2) from (1)
(1) +4x+%2B+8y+=+140+
(2) +-4x+-+2y+=+-80+
+6y+=+60+
+y+=+10+
Now plug this result back into
either (1) or (2)
(2) +4x+%2B+2%2A10+=+80+
(2) +4x+=+80+-+20+
(2) +4x+=+60+
(2) +x+=+15+
$15 = price of an adult ticket
$10 = price of a child ticket
check:
(1) +4%2A15+%2B+8%2A10+=+140+
(1) +60+%2B+80+=+140+
(1) +140+=+140+
OK
