2b-5=8b+1
First get the "b terms" all on one side of the equation and the numeric terms on the other. Remember, whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other to keep the 2 sides equal.
2b-5=8b+1
2b-5-8b = 8b+1-8b
2b-8b-5 = 8b-8b+1
-6b-5 = 0+1
-6b-5 = 1
-6b-5+5 = 1+5
-6b+0 = 6
-6b = 6
-6b/6 = 6/6
-6/6*b = 1
-1* b = 1
-1*b/-1 = 1/-1
1*b = -1
b=-1

Substitute this value back into the original equation to make sure it is correct.
