This can be solved using the sine of 10 degrees,
side opposite is 500 ft
hypotenuse = slant distance (s) flown by the plane
sin(10) = 500%2Fs
s = 500%2Fsin%2810%29
s = 2,879 ft flown by the plane to reach 500 ft alt
