You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A small city park consists of a rectangular lawn surrounded on all sides by a 330m2(squared) borded of flowers 2.5m wide. Find the area of the lawn if the entire park is 5m longer than it is wide.
---------
Draw the picture: a rectangle inside a larger rectangle.
Let the dimensions of the outer rectangle be x and x+5; label the picture with these dimensions.
The dimensions of the inner rectangle are x-5 and x+5-5=x because the border
is 2.5 on each side. These are the dimensions of the lawn.
The area of the lawn is therefore (x)(x-5) or x^2-5x
We need to find "x".
---------
EQUATION:
Area of outer rectangle - Area of inner rectangle = 330 m^2
x(x+5)-(x(x-5))=330
x^2+5x-x^2+5x=330
10x=330
x=33 meters
Lawn area = x(x-5)= 33(28)= 924 m^2
