Question 642877: a woman begins jogging at 3 pm at a 6 minute mile pace. later she reverses direction and runs at a 7 minute mile pace. if she returns to her starting point at 3:45. find the total number of miles run.
how do you set up the equation? I think it is a problem where you have two equations and substitute but I'm not positive. Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! begins jogging at 3 pm at a 6 minute mile pace.
later she reverses direction and runs at a 7 minute mile pace.
if she returns to her starting point at 3:45.
find the total number of miles run.
:
From the given information we know the entire run took 45 min
Actually a pretty simple equation
:
note that: A 6 min mile is a speed of 1/6 mi/min, a 7 min mile is 1/7 mi/min
:
let d = one-way distance
write a time equation, time = dist/speed + = 45
which is
6d + 7d = 45
13d = 45
d = 3.46 mi one way
total miles run 2(3.46) = 6.923 mi
