Question 642256: the parallel sides of a trapezium are a and b respectively. find the value of a + b if it has a area of 20cm2 and the distance between the parallel sides is 5cm.
1/2(a+b)(5)=20
i do not understand the next step
a+b=20 x 2 + 5

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1%2F2(a+b)(5) = 20

Multiply both sides by (2) to clear of fractions:

(2)1%2F2(a+b)(5) = (2)20

The (2) and the 1%2F2 multiply to give 1 and (2) times the 20
multiply to give 40. So we now have

(1)(a+b)(5) = 40

We can remove the (1)

   (a+b)(5) = 40

Next we divide both sides by 5:

  %28%28a%2Bb%29%285%29%29%2F5 = 40%2F5

Now we can cancel the (5) and the 5, and 40 divided by 5 gives 8.
So we have:

  %28%28a%2Bb%29cross%28%285%29%29%29%2Fcross%285%29 = 8

  (a+b) = 8
