You can put this solution on YOUR website!

at 3 pm a plane leaves london to fly madrid, 1260km away. at 4 pm a plane leaves madrid to fly to london. the second plane flies 40km/h faster then the first. if the planes pass one another at 4:30 pm wat is the speed of each plane? i do not want an answer but i have no idea how to work it could you please help?

Let speed of slower plane = S
Then speed of faster plane = S + 40

Time the slower plane takes to get to the “passing point” = 1.5 hours
Time the faster plane takes to get to the “passing point” = ½ hour, or .5 hour

The planes will travel a total of 1,260 km
Therefore, distance traveled by slower plane, plus distance traveled by faster plane, equals total distance. This gives us:
highlight_green%281.5S+%2B+.5%28S+%2B+40%29+=+1260%29

Solve for S and this will give you the slower plane’s speed. Add the slower plane’s speed to 40 and you have the faster plane’s speed.
