Question 639957: Please help with this problem 2/5y=4/5. I understand this may be a simple question for some of you but I've not had algebra....ever. I don't just want a answer but also a expalanation.

Another way of writing this equation is:
As you can see, the denominator of both of the fractions is the same. So, we can get rid of the denominators of these fractions and rewrite this equation as
2y = 4
To find out what y is, we have to get y all by itself on the left side of the equal sign. To do this, we have to do the opposite of what is being done on the left side of the equal sign. On the left side of the equal sign, 2 is being multiplied by y. So, to get y by itself, we must do the opposite of that to BOTH sides of the equal sign. Division is the opposite of multiplication, so divide both sides of the equal sign by 2:
The 2 in the numerator and the 2 in the denominator, because they are the same number, cancel each other out, so on the left side of the equal sign, we are left with y. Now, just divide the right side of the equal sign: 4/2 = 2. This leaves us with our final answer
FINAL ANSWER: y = 2
