Question 63684: You are working in a store and sell 3 lawn mowers and 3 hedge trimmers for $750. The next day you sell 4 lawn mowers and 5 hedge trimmers for $1050. What is the price of the lawn mower and the hedge trimmer Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=price of lawn mower and
y=price of hedge trimmer. We know that
(1) 3x+3y=$750 and
(2) 4x+5y=$1050
Divide (1) by 3
(1) x+y=$250 or y=$250-x
(2) 4x+5y=$1050
Substitute y=$250-x into (2) and we get:
4x+5($250-x)=$1050 simplifying
4x+$1250-5x=$1050 collecting like terms, we have
4x-5x=$1050-$1250
-x=-$200 or
x=$200 price of lawn mowers
substitute into (1) we have
y=$250-x=$250-$200 =$50
y=$50 price of Hedge Trimmers
ck
3x+3y=$750
3($200)+3($50)=$750
$600+$150=$750
$750=$750
and
4x+5y=$1050
4($200)+5($50)=$1050
$800+$250=$1050
$1050=$1050
Hope this helps. Happy holidays---ptaylor
