19. One high-speed jet travels 100 miles per hour faster than another. When one plane travels 2000 miles, the other travels 1500 miles. Find the speed of each plane.
Let average speed of plane be S
Then speed of jet = S + 100
Time jet takes to travel 2,000 miles equals time plane takes to fly 1,500 miles
1,500(S + 100) = 2000S ----- Cross-multiplying
1,500S + 150,000 = 2,000S
– 2,000S + 1,500S = - 150,000
– 500S = - 150,000
S, or average speed of plane = , or mph
Jet’s average speed = , or mph
