Question 635826: Please help me solve this problem. Thank you.
A standard rectangular highway billboard sign has a perimeter of 124ft. The length is 6ft more than three times the width. Find the dimension of the sign.

Note: Use a variable to represent the width. Use the same variable to write the length. Add 2 lengths and 2 widths to equal 124.

The equation for perimeter is... P = 2L + 2W
I set it up as.... 124 = 2(6) +2 (w)
Yet I'm stuck after this part. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

you are given:
a perimeter of a standard rectangular highway billboard sign P=124ft
The length L is 6ft more than three+times the width W, which means L=3W%2B6ft
The equation for perimeter is: P+=+2L+%2B+2W or P+=+2%28L+%2B+W%29
124ft=+2%28L+%2B+W%29.....substitute L with 3W%2B6ft
124ft+=+2%283W%2B6ft%2B+W%29

124ft%2F2=+4W%2B6ft
62ft-6ft=+4W
56ft=+4W
56ft%2F4=+W
highlight%2814ft=+W%29...now find L
L=3W%2B6ft
L=3%2A14ft%2B6ft
L=42ft%2B6ft
highlight%28L=48ft%29
check:

124ft+=+2%28L%2B+W%29

124ft+=+2%2848ft%2B14ft%29

124ft+=+2%2862ft%29
124ft+=+124ft
