Do not let the radical bother You.  Isolate it and square it away!

-sqrt%282x%2B1%29+=+-9+

sqrt%282x%2B1%29+=+9+    | Squaring both sides of the EQ

      2x + 1 = 81

          2x = 80

           x = 40
