You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The speed of a moving sidewalk at an airport is 2ft/sec.
A person can walk 28 ft forward on the moving sidewalk in the same time it
takes to walk 11 ft on a moving sidewalk in the opposite direction.
At what rate would a person walk on a nonmoving sidewalk?
:
Let w = walking speed on a normal sidewalk
then
(w+2) = speed going the same way on the moving sidewalk
and
(w-2) = speed going against
:
Write a time equation, time = dist/speed
:
28%2F%28w%2B2%29 = 11%2F%28w-2%29
cross multiply
28(w-2) = 11(w+2)
28w - 56 = 11w + 22
28w - 11w = 22 + 56
17w = 78
w = 78/17
w = 4.6 ft/sec on a normal sidewalk
