I made an assumption that you were asking for the price of the dvd RACK rather than the cost of a dvd.
So we know that $18 is 50% of the cost before the markup. And that means that cost before the the markup is $36, and then the price after the markup is $54.

well... if 18 is a 50 percent markup, then we know that price is 150 percent of the original price, so we can go ahead and find what 2/3 of the price is to find the original price, easy way is divide by 3 then multiply by 2. your answer will be $12

Let cost of DVD rack be R

Since after a 50% markup, the price was $18, then we can say that:

1.5%2F1+=+18%2FR

1.5R = 18 ----- Cross-multiplying

R, or cost of rack = 18%2F1.5, or $highlight_green%2812%29
