Question 629194: I have tried working this out, and I have tried following all the other tutors that have helped other students with similar problems like mine, but I am stuck:
My problem is this.
Essay: Show all work. A school designer wants to create a whiteboard with the optimal dimensions to enhance learning. It is determined that if ONE side of the whiteboard is x+y inches, the other side should be x^2-3xy+7y^2 inches. WRITE an algebraic expression for the area of such a whiteboard, SIMPLIFY it, and INCLUDE correct UNITS with your solutions.
I think I have gotten confused but this is what I have done:
L=lenght=(x)= inches
w= width=(y)= inches
x^2 - 3xy this is where I got...Can one of you tutors please help?
Thanks in advance......

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-------
length = x+y
width = x^2-3xy+7y^2
----
Area = length * width
A = (x+y)(x^2-3xy+7y^2)
----
A = x(x^2-3xy+7y^2) + y(x^2-3xy+7y^2)
---
A = x^3- 3x^2y + 7xy^2 + x^2y - 3xy^2 + 7y^3
---
A = (x^3 - 2x^2y +4xy^2 + 7y^3) in^2

Area = L*W
Area+=+%28x%2By%29%2A%28x%5E2-3xy%2B7y%5E2%29
Area+=+x%5E3+-+2x%5E2y+%2B+4xy%5E2+%2B+7y%5E3 sq inches
No "simplification" is possible.
