Question 628751: A meatloaf mixture is made by combing ground turkey costing $1.49 per pound with ground beef costing $2.13 per pound. How many pounds of each should be used to make 8 lbs. of meatloaf mixture costing $1.89 per pound?
Please so work.
So far I've got 1.49x+2.13(1.49-x)=189(8)
Don't think I understand the method yet.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +a+ = pounds of ground turkey needed
Let +b+ = pounds of ground beef needed
given:
(1) +a+%2B+b+=+8+
(2) +%28+1.49a+%2B+2.13b+%29+%2F+8+=+1.89+
----------------------------
(2) +1.49a+%2B+2.13b+=+8%2A1.89+
(2) +1.49a+%2B+2.13b+=+15.12+
(2) +149a+%2B+213b+=+1512+
Multiply both sides of (1) by +149+
and subtract (1) from (2)
(2) +149a+%2B+213b+=+1512+
(1) +-149a+-+149b+=+-1192+
+64b+=+320+
+b+=+5+
and, since
(1) +a+%2B+b+=+8+
(1) +a+%2B+5+=+8+
(1) +a+=+3+
3 pounds of ground turkey are needed
5 pounds of ground beef are needed
check:
(2) +%28+1.49%2A3+%2B+2.13%2A5+%29+%2F+8+=+1.89+
(2) +%28+4.47+%2B+10.65+%29+%2F+8+=+1.89+
(2) +15.12+%2F+8+=+1.89+
(2) +15.12+=+15.12+
OK
