Question 628639: Essay: Show all work. A gardender wants to create a trangular garden in the shape of a RIGHT Triangle with the shortest side length x-2yft. and the middle length side x+4yft. What is an algebraic expression for the area of the garden? Be sure to multiply and express in the simplest correct mathematical form, including units.
1) I started working this problem as a) b) c) ...a) being the shortest side. and c) is the base would be the middle ..correct?
area= (1/2) base*height
area= (1/2)(x-2yft)(x+4yft.)
area= (1/2)(x^+ .................This is where I start getting confused.
Please help?
Thanks in advance.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

------------------
a%5E2+%2B+b%5E2+=+c%5E2
c = the long side, the hypotenuse
a & b are the other 2 sides, which you call the base doesn't matter.
------
Area = b*h/2 = a*b/2
----
Area+=+%28x-2y%29%2A%28x%2B4y%29%2F2
Area+=+%28x%5E2+%2B+2xy+-+8y%5E2%29%2F2
-------
That's all you can do, no reduction is possible.
