Question 628016: so i can't solve this one, can anyone help?: The attendance at the Saturday night baseball game was three times the attendance at Saturday's game. In all, 56,000 fans attend the games. How many fans were in each game? if someone could also explain to me how its done, that'd be great!:D

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I'm assuming that both games were played on the same day (Saturday). One was played during the day and the other was played at night.

Let D = number who attended the day game and N = number who attended the night game

Since "The attendance at the Saturday night baseball game was three times the attendance at Saturday's (daytime) game" this means that

N = 3D

Also, "In all, 56,000 fans attend the games", which tells us that

N + D = 56000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

N + D = 56000 ... Start with the second equation

3D + D = 56000 ... Plug in N = 3D

In other words, we replace N with 3D

Now solve for D

3D + D = 56000

4D = 56000 ... Combine like terms.

D = 56000/4 ... Divide both sides by 4.

D = 14000 ... Divide

So 14000 people attended the game during the day.

Since we know that D = 14000, we can use this to find N

N = 3D

N = 3(14000)

N = 42000

So 42000 people went to the night game.
