You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Jane walks 1 mile to the book store in the same time she can bicycle 2.5 miles to the mall.
The speed on the bicycle is 6 miles/hour faster than her walking speed.
What is her walking speed?
:
Let w = the walking speed
then
(w+6) = the biking speed
:
Write a time equation, time = dist/speed
:
walk time = bike time
1%2Fw = 2.5%2F%28%28w%2B6%29%29
cross multiply
2.5w = 1(w+6)
2.5w = w + 6
2.5w - w = 6
1.5w = 6
w = 6%2F1.5
w = 4 mph is the walking speed

:
We can check this by finding the times of each, should be equal
walk: 1/4 hr
bike: 10/2.5 = 1/4 hr
