You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A chemist has two solutions of sulfuric acid - a 20% solution and an 80%
solution. How much of each should be used to obtain 100 liters of a 62%
solution?
`
` x liters of 20% solution contains .20x liters of H2SO4
` y liters of 80% solution contains .80y liters of H2SO4
`100 liters of 62% solution contains .62(100) or 62 liters of H2SO4
`
`Adding up the liters of liquid:
`
` ` ` `x + y = 100
`
Adding up the liters of H2SO4
`
`.20x + .80y = 62
`
Can you solve this system?:
`
` x + ` y = 100
.2x + .8y = 62
`
`
Answer x = 30 liters of 20%, 70 liters of 80% dolution.
