Translation Rules:
1. To translate a graph of an equation RIGHT by K units replace x by (x - K)
in the equation.
2. To translate a graph of an equation LEFT by K units replace x by (x + K)
in the equation.
3. To translate a graph of an equation UP by K units add +K to the right side
of the equation.
4. To translate a graph of an equation DOWN by K units add -K to the right side
of the equation.
A. y = 2/(x - 3) – 5
Here, in y = 2/x, the x has been replaced by (x - 3) and -5 has been added to
the right side, so the graph of y = 2/x has been translated 3 units RIGHT
and 5 units DOWN.
B. y = 2/(x – 5) – 3
Here, in y = 2/x, the x has been replaced by (x - 5) and -3 has been added to
the right side, so the graph of y = 2/x has been translated 5 units RIGHT
and 3 units DOWN.
C. y = 2/(x – 3) + 5
Here, in y = 2/x, the x has been replaced by (x - 3) and +5 has been added to
the right side, so the graph of y = 2/x has been translated 3 units RIGHT
and 5 units UP.
