Question 625909: Fred has 5 hours at his disposal. How far (in miles) can he ride his bicycle, going at 10 miles per hour, and returning by the same route at 4 miles per hour? Found 2 solutions by richwmiller, Edwin McCravy:Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
The other tutor just found the two times, not the distances.
You'd have to multiply them by the rates to get the distances.
Make this DRT chart:
DISTANCE RATE TIME = }
going x 10 x/10
coming x 4 x/4
total 2x 5
+ = 5
Multiply through by 20
20· + 20· = 20·5
2x + 5x = 100
7x = 100
x = = miles
So he will ride a total of miles
