Hi,
A small swimming pool can be filled with water by 2 pipes in 3 hours.
If the larger pipe alone takes 8 hours less than the smaller pipe hrshighlight%28x%29to fill the pool
find the time in which it will be filled by each pipe operating singly
Question states***PER hr Key
+1%2Fx+%2B+1%2F%28x-8%29+=+1%2F3 |Multiplying thru by 3x(x-8) so as all denominators = 1
3(x-8) + 3x = x(x-8)
3x - 24 + 3x = x^2 - 8x
x^2 -14x + 24 = 0
(x - 12)(x - 2) = 0
x = 12hr (throwing out illogical solution x = 2)
Smaller Pipe takes 12hr and the larger Pipe 4hrs to fill the pool by itself
