2x + y = 36
Subtract 1y from each side of the equation.
2x + y - 1y = 36 - 1y
Combine like terms:
y - 1y = 0
2x = 36 - 1y
Divide each side by 2
2x/2 = 36/2 - 1y/2
x = 18 - 1y/2 or
x = 18 - 0.5y
