Some people use the acronymn FOIL to indicate that you multiply the first terms, outer terms, inner terms and last terms. That's fine for binomials, but when you get more than two terms in each parentheses students don't know what to do.
I like to tell people to distribute the first term in the first parentheses, then the second term, then add your like terms.
:
(2a-3y)(2a+3y)
2a(2a+3y)-3y(2a+3y)
2a(2a)+2a(3y)-3y(2a)-3y(3y) <--If you look at this closely you'll see it's FOILed.
