You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Joseph has 4 times as many quarters as he does dimes. If he has a total of $2.20, how many of each type of coin does he have?
Joseph has Q quarters and D dimes.
We know that Q=4D.
We know Joseph has 220 cents, so 25Q%2B10D+=+220.
Replace Q with 4D, and we get 25%2A4%2AD%2B10D+=+220.
Or, 110D+=+220.
So, D=2.
He has 2 dimes and 4 times as many quarters or 8 quarters.
To verify:
2 dimes + 8 quarters = 20 cents + 200 cents = 220 cents = $2.20.
