Question 62079: Hi,
I am trying to help my child with some homework and we are stuck as there is nothing in the text book to explain how the solutions are found. Here are the questions from each section with one of the samples. Please could you explain to us how you work them out also?
1. Factorise the following expressions.
a) 8a=16
2. Write the following as single powers.
a) y squared + y cubed
3. Expand the following.
a) x(x+2y)
4. Expand the brackets in these expressions.
a) 2(x+3)+2(x+4)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. Factorise the following expressions.
a) 8a=16
Make into an equation = 0, then factor it:
Subtract 16 from both sides and you have:
8a - 16 = 0
Factor out 8
8(a - 2) = 0

2. Write the following as single powers.
a) y squared + y cubed
(y*y) + (y*y*y)
:
:
3. Expand the following.
a) x(x+2y)
Mult what's inside the bracket;
x^2 + 2xy

:
4. Expand the brackets in these expressions.
a) 2(x+3)+2(x+4)
2x + 6 + 2x + 8
4x + 14 Or 2(2x + 7), not sure what "expand the brackets" means
