Question 61607: Once again, I've got a solution that doesn't graph properly. My lines do not intersect.

Solve by graphing and give Solution for X and Y:
2X=Y+1
2X-Y=5

Equation 1:
2X=0+1
2X=1
X=1/2 (1/2, 0)
2(0)=Y+1
0=Y+1
-1=Y (0, -1)

Equation 2:
2X-0=5
2X=5
X=5/2 or 2 1/2 (2 1/2,0)
2(0)-Y=5
0-Y=5
-Y=5
Y=-5 (0, -5)

Graphing shows the lines run almost parallel. Did I do this right?
 Answer by rchill(405)      (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If the lines are parallel, they should have the same slope. Solving for y, we get y=2x-1 in the first equation and y=2x-5 for the second... and we see we do indeed have the same slope of 2. Therefore the lines are parallel and there is no solution.
