Question 61407: 4. 2/3n + 8 = 1/3n - 1 I'm not very good with fractions, well in general I am, but not in Inequalities. I don't really understand how to work the fractions like regular numbers, especially if the answer comes out like: 2/5w = something. Then what does w alone equal? how do I get w alone? - Thank you very much for your time, Savannah

You can put this solution on YOUR website! I think that one of the best ways of working algebra problems that contain fractions is first to get rid of the fractions and that's what we'll do.
2/3n+8=1/3n-1 Now, we get rid of the fractions by multiplying both sides by 3n
(2/3n)(3n)+8(3n)=(1/3n)(3n)-1(3n) simplifying, we get:
2+24n=1-3n further simplifying, we have
27n=-1
n=-1/27
Lets say that 2/5w=1/4 Here, we have two fractions to get rid of. By inspection, we see that the smallest number that both 4 and 5 divide evenly into is 20. We could multiply both sides by 20 but that will not take care of the w so lets multiply both sides by 20w.
(2/5w)(20w)=(1/4)(20w) simplifying, we get
8=5w
w=8/5
Hope this helps------ptaylor
