3x%2B2%28x%2B4%29=5%28x%2B1%29%2B3 Start with the given equation.


3x%2B2x%2B8=5x%2B5%2B3 Distribute.


5x%2B8=5x%2B5%2B3 Combine like terms on the left side.


5x%2B8=5x%2B8 Combine like terms on the right side.


5x=5x%2B8-8 Subtract 8 from both sides.


5x-5x=8-8 Subtract 5x from both sides.


0x=8-8 Combine like terms on the left side.


0x=0 Combine like terms on the right side.


0=0 Simplify.


Since this equation is always true for any x value, this means x can equal any number. So there are an infinite number of solutions.

Get the x's all on one side, so subtract
+5x+ from both sides
+3x+%2B+2x+-+5x+%2B+8+=+5+%2B+3+
Subtract 8 from both sides
+5x+-+5x+=+8+-+8+
+0+=+0+

What's up? Why don't I get "x = something"?
That's because the equation is an "identity".
An identity just states that +4+=+4+, or
something like it.

To prove it's an identity, I should be able to plug in any value
for +x+, and the equation will be true, so I'll say +x+=+13+
