Question 61282: We were told to solve the word problems. We were on Linear Equations and finding the slopes when he passed out these word problems. This is what the word problems says : The Forrest Theater can seat a total of 360 people. They take in $15,150 when every seat is sold. If orchestra section tickets cost $45 and balcony tickets cost $35, find the number of seats in the orchestra section and the number of seats in the balcony.
Thank you very much for your time and effort it is very much appreciated. I tend to struggle with word problems. It gets scrambled in my head and I just don't understand what I am supposed to do. Thanks again I am looking forward to the explanation and answer on how this problem is solved.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x=number of seats in the orchestra section
Then 360-x=number of seats in the balcony section
Now we know that the amt of $taken in by selling all the orchestra seats (x)($45) plus the amt of $ taken in by selling all the balcony seats (360-x)($35)has to equal total amt taken in ($15,150) when all seats are sold. Thus, our equation to solve is:
45x+(360-x)(35)=15150 simplifying, we get:
45x-35x=15150-12600 or
10x=2550
x=255 seats in the orchestra section
360-x=360-255=105 seats in the balcony section
Hope this helps----ptaylor
