Let the number be “x”
Given 20% greater than 30.

That is 20%(x) > 30
0.2x > 30
x >150 (1)

Given 40% less than 60
That is 40%(x) < 60
0.4x < 60
x < 150 (2)
From equation(1) and equation(2), we find that
x >150 and x <150
Therefore x = 150

Let "x" be the number.
x=30+0.2(30)=36
x=60-0.4(60)=36
