Best way to explain this is use a cube. (a box or similar object)
How much could you put in the box? That's volume.
Paint the outside of the box. That's surface area.

Surface area is the area of the thin sheet of aluminum required to make a soda can, meausured in square units. Volume is the amount of soda in the can, measured in cubic units.

In the sense of polynomials, the formula for surface area is a second degree expression and the formula for volume is a third degree expression.
