Question 609370: It takes Peter 4 hours to make a 25 sq yd piece of land.
It takes John 5 hours to make a 25 sq yd piece of land
How much land can they make together in 8 hours?
(I modified this question. That's why it might sound a little weird.I just used the same numbers and almost the same situation.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is a work problem. I think of it as a
rate problem.
Peter's rate is +25%2F4+ sq yds / hr
John's rate is +25%2F5+ sq yds / hr
Add their rates to get their rate together
+25%2F4+%2B+25%2F5++=+x+%2F+8+
Multiply both sides by +4%2A5%2A8+
+25%2A5%2A8+%2B+25%2A4%2A8+=+4%2A5%2Ax+
+25%2A%28+40+%2B+32+%29+=+20x+
+4x+=+5%2A72+
+4x+=+360+
+x+=+90+
Together they can make 90 sq yds in 8 hrs
